Skyscrapers rise, a couple falls in and out of love, fashions wholly change but compulsion fuses to one spot in time. Zodiac by David Fincher uses the unstoppable thrust of forward motion to illustrate the obsession created in San Francisco Chronicle cartoonist Robert Graysmith(played by Jack Gyllenhaal) by the unsolved murders in the late 1960s of the Zodiac Killer. Fincher expertly uses the extended film length(2 hours, 37 minutes) to convey the utter paranoia and stifling oppression Graysmith experienced while trying to bring meaning and closure to events that where unfathomable. A masterpiece of unflinching visions of gut wrenching violence and the emptiness unresolved mysteries leave in the seeker.
